Great team win for H1 on Saturday

SV70- Bonn  81:74 (19:15, 21:18, 23:25, 18:16)

Saturday night in Haspe the guys of SV70 kept the win streak going against Bonn. We are on a 3 game win streak since the Christmas break and finally are playing the type of basketball I believed we could have played all season. I told the guys in the first half of the season that we would put a win streak together. I told them to continue to believe that we had some good basketball left in us to play and we just needed a taste of win to have something to play for. We lost some close games all season long and now it feels good to see the hard work you put in be rewarded with the win.

We knew from the start Bonn would not give us the win. They also are fighting to stay in the league and every game counts for them also. At the end of the 1st quarter we had the lead 19:15, but we gave us three 3 pointers. That was the was the main focus for the game, not to let them get confidence from having open 3’s. In the 2nd quarter we did a better job closing out hard and chasing the shooter off the 3 point line. At half time we had the lead 40:33, but we was still not playing our best basketball. At half time we talked about staying in control of the game. We knew Bonn would make a run and we had to be ready for it.

Bonn came out the 3rd quarter and surely made a run. Most was to our lack of focus on the defensive end and some was just very tough shots. They outscored us 23:25 in the 3rd quarter, but we kept fighting. We had the lead for 38 minutes of the game and that is big for us. We knew we had to stay in control of the game and not give this Bonn team too much confidence. We got big stops late in the game and that was important for us, the guys fought the whole game and deserve all the credit for this win. With the win it puts us now in the 10th spot in the standings, still a lot of work to do but this win was a great step forward. Many people doubted us after the 1st half of the season, but now the chance of us staying in the league is looking good.

Another big game next week against BG Hagen. This will be another tough test for us as BG is one of if not the most talented team in the league. So many different challenges playing against them presents.

Scoring: Luchterhandt 22, Lewis 20, Fouhy 13, Kiknadze 12, Spitale 6, Voca 4, Bampoulis 2, Wasielewski 2, Stockey, Toptan, Paulsen
